Establishing Identity Affirming Library Spaces & Doing Self Work

You can find the interview with the ISTE Librarians Network Blog HERE.

Excerpt: In your Edutopia piece you wrote, “Fostering educational excellence requires understanding equity, embracing diverse perspectives, and countering bias that hinders inclusionary work.” How do you see school libraries and librarians being able to reach educational excellence? What needs to be happening?

Self-work is critical. If your profession involves interactions with human beings, it is imperative to think about the construction of your identity and how you’ve been socialized to understand the humanity of others. We were all conditioned to process differences and the idea of inclusion in various ways. It is important to reflect on that conditioning process, how it has impacted our decision-making and social contexts, and the ways it has shaped our beliefs.
